Illinois Death Penalty Abolished

Governor Pat Quinn signed into law a Bill that would abolish the death penalty in Illinois. The Bill does not go into effect until July 2, 2011; however, Quinn has commuted all pending death penalty executions and has publicly promised to commute any death penalty executions that arise between now and the July 1st effective date. Quinn acknowledged that Illinois' death penalty system isn't fail safe and justified the Bill with that reasoning.
